“Looks like a lot of work to me.” Trey flipped through a few more pages of the spiral-bound workbook. Then he tossed it back on his brother’s desk. A premarital counseling workbook. One like Meg and Joe would be completing in the coming weeks.

He nudged a stack of related videos. “I mean, if it’s right, if God’s in it, why all the boot camp stuff? If it takes all this not to end up in a divorce court, maybe people should be rethinking the whole shootin’ match.”

Which is what his once-upon-a-time girlfriend, Tanya Tyber, had done three years ago. Hit the door running when after twenty-two months and fifteen days—yep, she had it figured down to the days—he still hadn’t put a ring on her finger.

“That’s why we do this.” Jason tapped the workbook cover. “Separates the goats from the sheep, so to speak. Or at least alerts the starry-eyed to the realities of wedded bliss.”

Even after all this time the memory of Tanya’s departure left him shaken. Her words still wounded. Scarred. He’d heard them echoed, in more gentle tones, in Kara’s evaluation of him yesterday. But Tanya had believed him incapable of settling down. Keeping a commitment.

The very thing he, too, feared.

“I only wish more would take time to build a stronger foundation,” his brother continued. “Everyone’s in such a rush. Afraid if they don’t tie the knot and tie it fast, their life’s ruined. If only they knew the half of it—what ruin looks and feels like once you’re in the middle of a bad marriage.”

Trey picked up the doll he’d come to retrieve for his niece, having left Mary in Kara’s company. “Don’t kid yourself, Jas, it’s not easy being single, finding someone who shares your values. Your beliefs. Hard enough without others judging you.”

“Easier than being unhappily married.”

Trey snorted. “Won’t argue with that, but there are people—even church people—who make sure you know you’re not up to their standards if you don’t have that ring on your finger. Or a certificate of divorce in hand to show that you at least ‘qualified’ at one point in time.”

“You don’t mean people like Reyna, do you?”

He frowned. Where’d he get an idea like that? His brother was as dense as a rock sometimes. “No, not Reyna. She wants me to be happy. To settle down near the girls.”

He moved to the open office door, then swung around again to face his brother. “No, I mean the ones who disregard that it’s either not God’s timing or not his best plan. Insinuate there’s something inherently wrong with you.”

Jason pushed back in his chair, donning his irritatingly benign, pastor-like countenance. “I’m sensing dormant hostility here. Residual Tanya? If you want to talk about it, I have a cancellation on my schedule at—”

“Sense whatever you want to, Jas. I’m done talking. I’ve got to get back to work.”

Pulling the office door closed behind him, Trey exited the building by the back door. Now why’d he have to go getting irritated like that? Jas meant well.
