âLooks like a lot of work to me.â Trey flipped through a few more pages of the spiral-bound workbook. Then he tossed it back on his brotherâs desk. A premarital counseling workbook. One like Meg and Joe would be completing in the coming weeks.
He nudged a stack of related videos. âI mean, if itâs right, if Godâs in it, why all the boot camp stuff? If it takes all this not to end up in a divorce court, maybe people should be rethinking the whole shootinâ match.â
Which is what his once-upon-a-time girlfriend, Tanya Tyber, had done three years ago. Hit the door running when after twenty-two months and fifteen daysâyep, she had it figured down to the daysâhe still hadnât put a ring on her finger.
âThatâs why we do this.â Jason tapped the workbook cover. âSeparates the goats from the sheep, so to speak. Or at least alerts the starry-eyed to the realities of wedded bliss.â
Even after all this time the memory of Tanyaâs departure left him shaken. Her words still wounded. Scarred. Heâd heard them echoed, in more gentle tones, in Karaâs evaluation of him yesterday. But Tanya had believed him incapable of settling down. Keeping a commitment.
The very thing he, too, feared.
âI only wish more would take time to build a stronger foundation,â his brother continued. âEveryoneâs in such a rush. Afraid if they donât tie the knot and tie it fast, their lifeâs ruined. If only they knew the half of itâwhat ruin looks and feels like once youâre in the middle of a bad marriage.â
Trey picked up the doll heâd come to retrieve for his niece, having left Mary in Karaâs company. âDonât kid yourself, Jas, itâs not easy being single, finding someone who shares your values. Your beliefs. Hard enough without others judging you.â
âEasier than being unhappily married.â
Trey snorted. âWonât argue with that, but there are peopleâeven church peopleâwho make sure you know youâre not up to their standards if you donât have that ring on your finger. Or a certificate of divorce in hand to show that you at least âqualifiedâ at one point in time.â
âYou donât mean people like Reyna, do you?â
He frowned. Whereâd he get an idea like that? His brother was as dense as a rock sometimes. âNo, not Reyna. She wants me to be happy. To settle down near the girls.â
He moved to the open office door, then swung around again to face his brother. âNo, I mean the ones who disregard that itâs either not Godâs timing or not his best plan. Insinuate thereâs something inherently wrong with you.â
Jason pushed back in his chair, donning his irritatingly benign, pastor-like countenance. âIâm sensing dormant hostility here. Residual Tanya? If you want to talk about it, I have a cancellation on my schedule atââ
âSense whatever you want to, Jas. Iâm done talking. Iâve got to get back to work.â
Pulling the office door closed behind him, Trey exited the building by the back door. Now whyâd he have to go getting irritated like that? Jas meant well.
